IRVINE , a royal, municipal and See also:

police See also:burgh, and seaport of See also:Ayrshire, See also:Scotland. Pop. (19or) 9607. It is situated on the See also:north See also:bank of the See also:estuary of the Irvine, 29i m. S.W. of See also:Glasgow by the Caledonian railway, with a station also on the Glasgow & See also:South Western railway. It is connected with the suburb of Fullarton on the south See also:side of the See also:river by a See also:stone See also:bridge, which was built in 1746 and widened in 1827. See also:Alexander II. granted it a See also:charter, which was confirmed by See also:Robert See also:Bruce. Towards the end of the 17th See also:century it was reckoned the third See also:shipping See also:port in Scotland (Port Glasgow and See also:Leith being the leaders), and though its importance in this respect declined owing to the partial silting-up of the See also:harbour, its See also:water-See also:borne See also:trade revived after 1875, the sandy See also:bar having been removed and the wharfage extended and improved. The public buildings include the See also:town See also:hall, See also:academy (1814) and See also:fever See also:hospital. The See also:principal See also:historical remains are the square See also:tower of Stanecastle and the See also:ancient Seagate See also:Castle, which contains some See also:good specimens of See also:Norman See also:architecture. The See also:industries include See also:engine-making, See also:shipbuilding, See also:iron- and See also:brass-See also:founding, the manufacture of chemicals, See also:brewing and See also:soap-making. Irvine unites with See also:Ayr, See also:Campbeltown, See also:Inveraray and See also:Oban in sending one member to See also:parliament.

The exports consist principally of See also:

coal, iron and chemical products, and the imports of See also:grain, See also:timber, See also:lime-stone, ores and See also:general produce. At DREGHORN, 2 M. to the S.E. (pop. 1155) coal and iron are worked.
