He served in the See also:American See also:War of See also:Independence under See also:Rochambeau, and in 1789 was sent as See also:deputy to the States See also:General by the nobles of the bailliage of Peronne. In the Constituent See also:Assembly he formed with See also:Barnave and Adrien See also:Duport a sort of association called the " Triumvirate," which controlled a See also:group of about See also:forty deputies forming the advanced See also:left of the Assembly. He presented a famous See also:report in the Constituent Assembly on the organization of the See also:army, but is better known by his eloquent speech on the 28th of See also:February 1791, at the Jacobin See also:Club, against See also:Mirabeau, whose relations with the See also:court were beginning to be suspected, and who was a See also:personal enemy of Lameth. However, after the See also:flight of the See also:king to Varennes, Lameth became reconciled with the court. He served in the army as marechal-de-See also:camp under Luckner and See also:Lafayette, but was accused of See also:treason on the 15th of See also:August 1792, fled the See also:country, and was imprisoned by the Austrians. After his See also:release he engaged in See also:commerce at See also:Hamburg with his See also:brother See also:Charles and the duc d'See also:Aiguillon, and did not return to See also:France until the Consulate. Under the See also:Empire he was made See also:prefect successively in several departments, and in 1810 was created a See also:baron. In 1814 he attached himself to the Bourbons, and under the Restoration was appointed prefect of See also:Somme, deputy for See also:Seine-Inferieure and finally deputy for Seine-et-See also:Oise, in which capacity he was a See also:leader of the Liberal opposition. He died in Paris on the 18th of See also:March 1829. He was the author of an important See also:History of the Constituent Assembly (Paris, 2 vols., 1828–1829). Of his two See also:brothers, THEODORE LAMETH (1756–1854) served in the American war, sat in the Legislative Assembly as deputy from the See also:department of See also:Jura, and became marechal-de-camp; and CHARLES MALO See also:FRANCOIS LAMETH (1757–i832), who also served in See also:America, was deputy to the States General of 1789, but emigrated See also:early in the Revolution, returned to France under the Consulate, and was appointed See also:governor of See also:Wurzburg under the Empire.

Like Alexandre, Charles joined the Bourbons, succeeding Alexandre as deputy in 1829. See F. A. See also:
