English name came into the See also:country from See also:France at the See also:time of the See also:Norman See also:Conquest through See also:William de Molines (Moleyns, Molyneux), who obtained a See also:grant of Sefton, in See also:Lancashire, whence come the earls of Sefton to-See also:day. His descendant See also:Adam de Molyneux (Moleyns or See also:MOMBASA Molins), who died in 1450, was See also:bishop of See also:Chichester and keeper of the privy See also:seal; he was a son of See also:Sir See also:Richard Molyneux of Sefton, and See also:uncle of the Sir Richard Molyneux (d. 1459), the Lancastrian and favourite of See also:Henry VI., whose descendant Richard Molyneux (1593–1636) was created in 1628 1st See also:Viscount Molyneux of See also:Maryborough, a See also:title now merged in that of Sefton (created 1771). Another Molyneux See also:family of some importance is the Irish one, descended from Sir See also:Thomas Molyneux (1531–1597), Irish See also:chancellor of the See also:exchequer, who, See also:born at See also:Calais, settled in See also:Ireland in 1576. He was the See also:great-grandfather of Sir Thomas Molyneux, See also:Bart. (1661–1733), a well-known physician and zoologist, and of William Molyneux (1656–1698), the philosopher, astronomer and politician, the friend of See also:Locke, and author of Dioptrica nova (1692), whose famous See also:work on the legislative See also:independence of Ireland (The See also:Case of Ireland, &c. 1698) created much stir at the time. The latter's son See also:Samuel Molyneux (1689–1728), was also a well-known astronomer.
