His first important preferment was as See also:dean of Westminster (16o5); afterwards he held successively the bishoprics of See also:Rochester (16o8), See also:Lichfield (161o), See also:Lincoln (1614), See also:Durham (1617) and See also:Winchester (1628), and the archbishopric of See also:York (1631). When at Rochester he appointed See also:William See also:Laud as his See also:chaplain and gave him several valuable preferments. His See also:political activity while See also:bishop of Durham was rewarded with a privy councillorship in 1627. Neile sat regularly in the courts of See also:star-chamber and high See also:commission. His See also:correspondence with Laud and with See also:Sir See also:Dudley See also:Carleton and Sir See also:Francis See also:Windebank (See also:Charles I.'s secretaries of See also:state) are valuable See also:sources for the See also:history of the See also:time.
