WISE MASTERS, THE , a See also:cycle of stories of See also:Oriental origin. A See also:Roman See also:emperor causes his son to be educated away from the See also:court in the seven liberal arts by seven wise masters. On his return to court his stepmother the empress seeks to seduce him. To avert some danger presaged by the stars he is See also:bound over to a See also:week's silence. During this See also:time the empress accuses him to her See also:husband, and seeks to bring about his See also:death by seven stories which she relates to the emperor; but her narrative is each time confuted by tales of the See also:craft of See also:women related by the sages. Finally the See also:prince's lips are unsealed, the truth exposed, and the wicked empress is executed. The cycle of stories, which appears in many See also:European See also:languages, is of Eastern origin. An analogous collection occurs in See also:Sanskrit, but the See also:Indian See also:original is unknown. Travelling from the See also:east by way of Arabic, See also:Persian, See also:Syriac and See also:Greek, it was known as the See also:book of Sindibad, and was translated from Greek into Latin in the 1 zth See also:century by See also:Jean, de Hauteseille (Joannes de Alta See also:Silva), a See also:monk of the See also:abbey of Haute-Seille near See also:Toul, with the See also:title of Dolopathos (ed. H. Oesterley, See also:Strassburg, 1893). This was translated into See also:French about 1210 by a See also:trouvere named Herbers as Li See also:Romans di Dolopathos; another French version, Li Romans See also:des See also:Sept sages, was based on a different Latin original.

Three metrical romances probably based on the French, and dating from the 14th century, exist in English. The most important of these is The Sevyn Sages by See also:John See also:Rolland of See also:Dalkeith edited for the See also:Bannatyne See also:Club (See also:Edinburgh, 1837). ' The Latin See also:romance was frequently printed in the 15th century, and Wynkyn de W at-de printed an English version about 1515. See G.
