Educated at Merchant Taylors' School and at St See also:John's See also:College, See also:Oxford, he took See also:holy orders, being ordained See also:priest on the 28th of May 1738. He was lecturer at St See also:Dunstan's in the See also:East, See also:chaplain to the See also:lord See also:mayor, then under-See also:master at Merchant Taylors' School until 1753, when he became See also:grammar master at See also:Christ's See also:Hospital. In 1760 he became See also:head master of Merchant Taylors' School, where in 1762 and 1763 he revived the See also:custom of dramatic performances. He retained his head-mastership until his See also:death on the 5th of See also:July 1778. He took a keen See also:interest in the See also:theatre, and it has been asserted that many of See also:David See also:Garrick's best productions and revivals owed much to his assistance. He was the author, although the fact was See also:long concealed, of High See also:Life below Stairs, a two-See also:act See also:farce presented at See also:Drury See also:Lane on the 31st of See also:October 1759; also of False See also:Concord (Covent See also:Garden, See also:March 20, 1764) and The See also:Tutor (Drury Lane, Feb. 4, 1765).
