He served in See also:Burma as a volunteer in 1852, was made a See also:captain in 1854, took the "See also:Meteor" See also:iron-clad See also:battery out to the See also:Black See also:Sea and See also:home again in 1856, was captain of the " See also:Pelota's " on the Australian station from 1857 to 1863, and commanded the See also:naval See also:brigade in New See also:Zealand during the See also:Maori See also:War, 186o-61, for which he was made a C.B. He became a See also:rear-admiral in 187o; in 1871–1872 he commanded the flying See also:squadron, was a See also:lord of the See also:admiralty in 1872–1874, and commanded the Channel See also:fleet, 1874–1876. On the 31st of See also:December 1876 he was made a See also:vice-admiral, a K.C.B. on the 2nd of See also:June 1877. In 188o–1883 he was commander-in-See also:chief of the fleet in the Mediterranean, and in 188o had also the chief command of the See also:European squadron sent to the See also:coast of See also:Albania as a demonstration to compel the See also:Porte to cede See also:Dulcigno to See also:Montenegro. On the 24th of May 1881 he was made a G.C.B., and on the 6th of May 1882 was promoted to the See also:rank of admiral. In See also:July 1882 he commanded at the See also:bombardment of See also:Alexandria and in the subsequent operations on the coast of See also:Egypt, for which service he was raised to the See also:peerage as Baron Alcester of Alcester in the See also:county of See also:Warwick, received a See also:parliamentary See also:grant of £25,000, the freedom of the See also:city of See also:London and a See also:sword of See also:honour: On his return from the Mediterranean he was for a couple of years again at the admiralty, and in 1886 he was placed on the retired See also:list. For the next nine years he lived chiefly in London, but latterly his See also:health was much broken, and he died on the 3oth of See also:March 1895. He was unmarried and the peerage became See also:extinct.
