CAMERON, See also:RICHARD (1648?–168o) , founder of a Scottish religious See also:sect of See also:Cameronians, which formed the See also:nucleus of the See also:regiment of this name in the See also:British See also:army, was See also:born at See also:Falkland in the See also:county of See also:Fife. He was educated at the See also:village school, and his success was so See also:great that, while still a youth, he was appointed schoolmaster. In this situation he became acquainted with some of the more enthusiastic See also:field-preachers. Persuaded by them he resigned his See also:post and entered the See also:family of See also:Sir See also:Walter See also:Scott of Harden as See also:chaplain and See also:tutor. Refusing to acknowledge the See also:Indulgence, he joined the rapks of the non-conforming ministers, and incited the inhabitants of the See also:southern counties of See also:Scotland to protest openly against the new See also:edict. So formidable was the agitation that the See also:government pronounced illegal all armed assemblages for religious purposes. Cameron took See also:refuge in See also:Holland, where he resided for some See also:time; but in the autumn of 1679 (probably) he returned to Scotland, and once more made himself formidable to the government. Shortly after the defeat of the See also:Covenanters at See also:Bothwell See also:Bridge in that See also:year, Cameron was slain in a skirmish at the See also:Aird's, or Airs, See also:Moss, fighting bravely at the See also:head of the few troops which he had been able to collect. His See also:prayer before going into See also:battle became a tradition—" See also:Lord spare the See also:green and take the ripe." After the See also:accession of See also:William III. the survivors were amnestied, and the Cameronian regiment was formed from them.
