CURWEN, See also:HUGH (d. 1568) , See also:English ecclesiastic and statesman, was a native of See also:Westmorland, and was educated at See also:Cambridge, afterwards taking orders in the See also:church. In May 1533 he ex-pressed approval of See also:Henry VIII.'s See also:marriage with See also:Anne See also:Boleyn in a See also:sermon preached before the See also:king. In 1541 he became See also:dean of See also:Hereford, and in 1555 See also:Queen See also:Mary nominated him to the archbishopric of See also:Dublin, and in the same See also:year he was appointed See also:lord See also:chancellor of See also:Ireland. He acted as one of the lords justices during the See also:absence from Ireland of the lord See also:deputy, the See also:earl of See also:Sussex, in 1557. On the See also:accession of See also:Elizabeth, Curwen at once accommodated himself to the new conditions by declaring himself a See also:Protestant, and was continued in the See also:office of lord chancellor. He was accused by the See also:archbishop of See also:Armagh of serious moral delinquency, and his recall was demanded both by the See also:primate and the See also:bishop of See also:Meath. In 1567 Curwen resigned the see of Dublin and the office of lord chancellor, and was appointed bishop of See also:Oxford. He died on the 1st of See also:November 1568.
