William III., was See also:born in See also:Berlin on the loth of See also:March 1828. He was educated for the See also:army, which he entered on his tenth birthday as second See also:lieutenant in the 14th See also:Foot See also:Guards. He became first lieutenant in 1844, and in 1846 entered the university of See also:Bonn, where he stayed for two years, being accompanied throughout by See also:Major von See also:Roon, afterwards the famous See also:war See also:minister. In 1848 he became a See also:company See also:commander in his See also:regiment, and soon after-wards served in the See also:Schleswig-See also:Holstein War on the See also:staff of Marshal von See also:Wrangel, being See also:present at the See also:battle of Schleswig (See also:April 23, 1848). Later in 1848 he became Riltmeister in the Garde du See also:Corps See also:cavalry regiment, and in 1849 major in the Guard Hussars. In this See also:year the prince took See also:part in the See also:campaign against the See also:Baden insurgents, and was wounded at the See also:action of Wiesenthal while leading a desperate See also:charge against entrenched See also:infantry. After this experience the See also:wild courage of his youth gave See also:place to the unshakable See also:resolution which afterwards characterized the prince's generalship. In 1852 he became See also:colonel, and in 1854 major-general and commander of a cavalry See also:brigade. In this capacity he was brought closely in See also:touch with General von Reyher, the See also:chief of the general staff, and with See also:Moltke. He married, in the same year, Princess See also:Marie See also:Anne of See also:Anhalt. In 18J7 he became commander of the 1st Guard Infantry See also:division, but very shortly afterwards, on See also:account of disputes concerned with the training methods then in force, he resigned the See also:appointment.
In 1858 he visited See also:France, where he minutely investigated the See also:state of the See also:French army, but it was not See also:long before he was recalled, for in 1859, in consequence of the Franco-See also:Austrian War, Prussia mobilized her forces, and Frederick Charles was made a divisional commander in the II. army corps. In this See also:post he was given the See also:liberty of action which had previously been denied to him.
