MAYSVILLE , a See also:city and the See also:county-seat of See also:Mason county, See also:Kentucky, U.S.A., on the See also:Ohio See also:river, 6o m. by See also:rail S.E. of See also:Cincinnati. Pop. (1890) 5358; (1900) 6423 (1155 negroes); (1910) 6141. It is served by the See also:Louisville & See also:Nashville, and the Chesapeake & Ohio See also:railways, and by steamboats on the Ohio river. Among its See also:principal buildings are the Mason county public library (1878), the Federal See also:building and Masonic and See also:Odd See also:Fellows' temples. The city lies between the river and a range of hills; at the back of the hills is a See also:fine farming See also:country, of which See also:tobacco of excellent quality is a leading product. There is a large plant of the See also:American Tobacco See also:Company at Maysville, and among the city's manufactures are pulleys, ploughs, See also:whisky, See also:flour, See also:lumber, See also:furniture, carriages, cigars, foundry and See also:machine-See also:shop products, bricks and See also:cotton goods. The city is a distributing point for See also:coal and other products brought to it by Ohio river boats. Formerly it was one of the principal See also:hemp markets of the country. The See also:place See also:early became a landing point for immigrants to Kentucky, and in 1784 a See also:double See also:log See also:cabin and a See also:blockhouse were erected here. It was then called See also:Limestone, from the See also:creek which flows into the Ohio here, but several years later the See also:present name was adopted in See also:honour of See also: In 1830, when the question of " See also:internal improvements " by the See also:National See also:government was an important See also:political issue, See also:Congress passed a See also:bill directing the government to aid in building a See also:turnpike road from Maysville to See also:Lexington. See also:President See also:Andrew See also:Jackson vetoed the bill on the ground that the proposed improvement was a See also:local rather than a national one; but one-See also:half the See also:capital was then furnished privately, the other half was furnished through several See also:state appropriations, and the road was completed in 1835 and marked the beginning of a See also:system of turnpike roads built with state aid.
