MEUNIER, CONSTANTIN (1831-1905) , Belgian painter and sculptor, was See also:born at Etterbeek, See also:Brussels. His first exhibit was a See also:plaster See also:sketch, " The See also:Garland," at the Brussels See also:Salon in 1851. Soon afterwards, on the See also:advice of the painter See also:Charles de Groux, he abandoned the See also:chisel for the See also:brush. His first important See also:painting, " The Salle St See also:Roch " (1857), was followed by a See also:series of paintings including " A Trappist Funeral " (1860), " See also:Trappists Ploughing " (1863), in collaboration with See also:Alfred Verwee, " Divine Service at the Monastery of La Trappe " (1871) and episodes of the Peasants' See also:War (1878). About 188o he was commissioned to illustrate those parts of Camille See also:Lemonnier's description of See also:Belgium in Le Tour du monde which referred to miners and factory-workers, and produced " In the Factory," " Smithery at See also:Cockerill's," " Melting See also:Steel at the Factory at See also:Seraing " (1882), " Returning from the See also:Pit," and " The Broken Crucible " (1884). In 1882 he was employed by the See also:government to copy Pedro Carnpana's " Descent from the See also:Cross " at See also:Seville, and in See also:Spain he painted such characteristic pictures as " The Cafe See also:Concert," " Procession on See also:Good See also:Friday," and " The See also:Tobacco Factory at Seville " (Brussels See also:Gallery). On his return to Belgium he was appointed See also:professor at the See also:Louvain See also:Academy of See also:Fine Arts. In 1885 he returned to statuary and produced " The Puddler," " The Hammerer " (r886), " Firedamp " (1889, Brussels Gallery), " Ecce Homo " (x891), " The Old Mine-See also:Horse " (1891), " The Mower " (1892), " The See also:Glebe " (1892), the See also:monument to See also:Father See also:Damien at Louvain (1893), " Puddler at the See also:Furnace " (1893), the See also:scheme of decoration for the Botanic See also:Garden at Brussels in collaboration with the sculptor Charles See also:van der Stappen (1893), " The Horse at the See also:Pond," in the square in the See also:north-See also:east See also:quarter of Brussels, and two unfinished See also:works, the " Monument to Labour " and the See also:Zola monument, in collaboration with the See also:French sculptor See also:Charpentier. The " Monument to Labour," which was acquired by the See also:State for the Brussels Gallery, comprises four See also:stone bas-reliefs, " See also:Industry," " The Mine," " See also:Harvest," and the " See also:Harbour "; four See also:bronze statues, " The Sower " " The See also:Smith " " The Miner," and the " Ancestor "; and a bronze See also:group, " Maternity," Meunier died at Brussels on the 4th of See also:April 1905.
