MULGRAVE, EARLDOM OF , a See also:title dating from 1626, when See also:Edmund See also:Sheffield, 3rd See also:Baron Sheffield of Butterwicke, was created See also:earl of Mulgrave. He was succeeded by his See also:grandson Edmund, the 2nd earl, who was one of the nine true peers who sat in See also:Oliver See also:Cromwell's See also:House of Lords. Edmund's son See also:John, 3rd earl, was created See also:marquess of See also:Normanby in 1694, and See also:duke of See also:Buckingham and Normanby in 1703; but on the See also:death of his son, the 2nd duke, without heirs in 1735, the titles became See also:extinct. The 2nd duke devised the estates of the Sheffield See also:family to his See also:mother See also:Catherine, a natural daughter of See also:James II., who had married as her first See also:husband the 3rd earl of Annesley, by whom she had a daughter Catherine, who married See also:William Phipps and had a son See also:Constantine Phipps. The latter succeeded to the See also:estate of Mulgrave in See also:Yorkshire in 1743 on the death of his grandmother, and in 1767 he was created Baron Mulgrave of New See also:Ross in the See also:peerage of See also:Ireland. His son was created a peer of See also:Great See also:Britain in 1790 with the title of Baron Mulgrave of Mulgrave; and the latter's See also:brother See also:Henry, the next in See also:succession, who was secretary of See also:state for See also:foreign affairs in 18o5 and held other high See also:government offices, was created See also:Viscount Normanby and earl of Mulgrave in 1812. The 2nd earl of this creation, who like his See also:father held several high See also:cabinet offices, was advanced in the peerage at the See also:coronation of See also:Queen See also:Victoria, being created marquess of Normanby in 1838.
