In 1871 he was appointed See also:professor of natural See also:history in the university of See also:Toronto, in 1874 professor of See also:biology in the See also:Durham See also:College of See also:Science and in 1875 professor of natural history in the university of St :See also:Andrews. This last See also:post he held until 1882, when he became regius professor of natural history in the university of See also:Aberdeen. He was elected F.R.S. in 1897. His See also:original See also:work was mainly on fossil invertebrata (See also:graptolites, stromatoporoids and See also:corals) ; but he did much See also:field work, especially in the See also:Lake See also:district, where he laboured in See also:company with Professor R. See also:Harkness and afterwards with Dr J.E. Mari. He was awarded the See also:Lyell See also:Medal by the See also:Geological Society in 1888. He died at Aberdeen on the 19th of See also:January 1899.
