town of See also:Germany, in the See also:kingdom of See also:Bavaria, situated on the right See also:bank of the See also:Main, which is here spanned by several See also:bridges, 27 M. N.E. of See also:Wurzburg by See also:rail, and at the junction of lines to See also:Kissingen, See also:Bamberg and Gemunden. Pop. (1905) 18,416. The See also:Renaissance town-See also:hall in the spacious See also:market-See also:place See also:dates from 1570; it contains a library and a collection of antiquities. St See also:John's See also:church is a See also:Gothic edifice with a lofty See also:tower; St Salvator's was built about 1720. Schweinfurt is well furnished with benevolent and educational institutions, including a gymnasium originally founded by Gustavus See also:Adolphus in 1631, and rebuilt in 1881. The See also:chief manufacture is paint (" Schweinfurt See also:green " is a well-known See also:brand in Germany), introduced in 1809; but See also:beer, See also:sugar, machinery, See also:soap and other drysalteries, See also:straw-See also:paper and See also:vinegar are also produced. Schweinfurt is mentioned in 790, and in the loth See also:century was the seat of a See also:margrave.

fell later to the See also:counts of Henneberg; but, receiving civic rights in the 13th century, it maintained its See also:independence as a See also:free imperial See also:city with few interruptions until 1803, when it passed to Bavaria. Assigned to the See also:grand See also:duke of Wurzburg in 1810, it was restored to Bavaria in 1814. In the See also:Thirty Years' See also:War it was occupied by Gustavus Adolphus, who erected fortifications, remains of which are still extant.
