SOFIA (Bulgarian Sredetz, the See also:middle See also:town, a name now little used) , the See also:capital of See also:Bulgaria, situated almost in the centre of an upland See also:plain, about 1700 ft. above See also:sea-level, between the Western Balkans on the N. and Mt Vitosh on the S. Pop. (1907) 82,187. Two small tributaries of the See also:river Isker, the Perlovetz and the Eleshnitza or Boyana, flow respectively on the See also:east and See also:west sides of the town. Since 188o the See also:city has been almost entirely renovated in the " See also:European " See also:style; the narrow tortuous lanes and mean houses of the See also:Turkish See also:epoch have almost disappeared, and a new town with straight parallel streets has been constructed in the eastern suburb. The See also:oldest See also:building in Sofia is the little See also:round See also:chapel of St See also:George in the Jewish See also:quarter—originally, it is said, a See also:Roman See also:temple; then a See also:church, then a See also:mosque, and now a church once more. Of the See also:principal mosques the large Buyuk Djamfa, with nine See also:metal cupolas, has become the See also:National Museum; the Tcherna Djamfa or See also:Black Mosque, latterly used as a See also:prison, has been transformed into a handsome church; the Banyabashi Djamfa, with its picturesque See also:minaret, is still used by Moslem worshippers. See also:Close to the last-named in the centre of the town, are the public See also:baths with hot springs (temperature .117° F ). In the See also:cathedral or church of Sveti Kral (the See also:Saint See also:King), a See also:modern building, are preserved the remains of the Servian king Stefan Urosh II A large new cathedral dedicated to St See also:Alexander Nevski was in course of construction in 1907; the See also:foundation See also:stone was taken from the church of St See also:Sophia. The See also:palace of the See also:prince, occupying the site of the Turkish konak was built by Prince Alexander in 188o-1882; it has been greatly enlarged by King See also:Ferdinand. In front of the palace is the public See also:garden or Alexander See also:Park. The See also:theatre, the largest in See also:south-eastern See also:Europe, was completed in 1906.
