He See also:early identified himself with religious See also:work in Philadelphia; was the first paid secretary, in 1857—1861, of that city's See also:Young Men's See also:Christian Association, of which he was president in 187o—1883, and in 1858 founded, and thereafter served as See also:superintendent of, the See also:Bethany (Presbyterian) See also:Sunday School, one of the largest in the See also:world. He took an active See also:part in the See also:movement which resulted in the formation of the United States Christian See also:Commission in 1861.
