ABERDOUR , a See also:

village of Fifeshire, See also:Scotland. Pleasantly situated on the See also:shore of the See also:Firth of Forth, 172 M. N.W. of See also:Edinburgh by the See also:North See also:British railway and 7 M. N.W. of See also:Leith by steamer, it is much resorted to for its excellent See also:sea-bathing. There are ruins of a See also:castle and an old decayed See also:church, which contains some See also:fine See also:Norman See also:work. About 3 m. S.W. is Donibristle See also:House, the seat of the See also:earl of See also:Murray (See also:Moray), and the See also:scene of the See also:murder (Feb. 7, 1592) of See also:James, 2nd (See also:Stuart) earl of Murray. The See also:island of Inchcolm, or Island of See also:Columba, m. from the shore, is in the See also:parish of Aberdour. As its name implies, its associations date back to the See also:time of Columba. The See also:primitive See also:stone-roofed See also:oratory is supposed to have been a See also:hermit's See also:cell. The Augustinian monastery was founded in 1123 by See also:Alexander I.

The buildings are well preserved, consisting of a See also:

low square See also:tower, church, cloisters, See also:refectory and small See also:chapter-house. The island of Columba was occasionally plundered by See also:English and other rovers, but in the 16th See also:century it became the See also:property of See also:Sir James Stuart, whose See also:grandson became 2nd earl of Murray by virtue of his See also:marriage to the See also:elder daughter of the 1st earl. From it comes the earl's See also:title of See also:Lord St Colme (1611).
