After the See also:war he invested extensively in See also:pine lands in Michigan, and accumulated a large See also:fortune in the lumber business. In 1884 he was elected See also:governor of Michigan on the Republican See also:ticket, serving from 1885 to 1887. In 1889-1890 he was See also:commander-in-See also:chief of the See also:Grand See also:Army of the See also:Republic. From 1897 to 1899 he was secretary of war in See also:President See also:McKinley's See also:cabinet. His See also:administration of the war See also:department during the See also:Spanish-American War was severely criticized for extravagance in army contracts, for unpreparedness, and for general inefficiency, charges which he answered in his The Spanish-American War (1901). The extent of his See also:personal responsibility is at least uncertain. In 1902 he was appointed by the governor of Michigan, and in 1903 was elected by the See also:state legislature, as See also:United States senator to See also:complete the unexpired See also:term of See also:- JAMES
