He was articled to a See also:solicitor, but soon ex-changed the See also:law for the See also:stage. After some years as a provincial actor he made his first See also:London See also:appearance, on the 3oth of See also:January 1823, at the See also:Surrey See also:theatre, as See also:Ramsay in the Fortunes of See also:Nigel. His success led to his engagement in 1827 at the Adelphi, where he remained as leading See also:low comedian until 1833. At the Haymarket, which he joined for summer seasons in 1833, and of which he was lessee from 1853 to 1878, he appeared as Bobby Trot in his own See also:Luke the Labourer; and here were produced a number of his plays and farces, Ellen See also:Wareham, See also:Uncle Tom and others. After his return from a visit to the See also:United States in 184o he played at several London theatres, among them the See also:Lyceum, where he was See also:Box at the first See also:representation of Box and See also:Cox. As manager of the Haymarket he surrounded himself with an admirable See also:company, including See also:Sothern and the Kendals. He produced the plays of See also:Gilbert, See also:Planche, Tom See also:Taylor and See also:Robertson, as well as his own, and in most of these he acted. He died on the 31st of See also:October 1879. He was the author of 150 plays, some of which have been very popular. His daughter, See also:Lucy See also:Isabella Buckstone (1858-1893), was an actress, who made her first London appearance at the Haymarket theatre as Ada See also:Ingot in See also:David See also:Garrick in 1875.
