CHINON , a See also:

S.W. of See also:Tours on the See also:State railway. Pop. (1906) 4071. Chinon lies at the See also:foot of the rocky See also:eminence which is crowned by the ruins of the famous See also:castle. Its narrow, winding streets contain many houses of the 15th and 16th centuries. The See also:oldest of its churches, St Mexme, is in the Romanesque See also:style, but only the See also:facade and See also:nave are See also:left. The See also:church of St See also:Etienne See also:dates from the 15th See also:century, that of St See also:Maurice from the 12th, 15th and 16th centuries. The castle, which has undergone considerable See also:modern restoration, consists of three portions. That to the See also:east, the See also:Chateau de St Georges, built by See also:Henry II. of See also:England, has almost vanished, only the See also:foundation of the See also:outer See also:wall remaining. The Chateau du Milieu (11th to 15th centuries) comprises the keep, the See also:Pavilion de I'Horloge and the See also:Grand Logis, in the See also:principal apartment of which the first See also:meeting between See also:Joan of Arc and See also:Charles VII. took See also:place. Of the Chateau du Coudray, which is separated by a See also:moat from the Chateau du Milieu, the See also:chief remains are the Tour du See also:Moulin (iothce.ntury) and two less See also:ancient towers.

It was occupied by the Visigoths, and subsequently, after forming See also:part of the royal domain, came to the See also:counts of See also:Touraine and from them to the counts of See also:Anjou. Henry II. often resided in the castle, and died there. The place was taken by See also:Philip See also:Augustus in 1205 after a See also:year's See also:siege.
