CLINTON , a See also:

village of See also:Oneida See also:county, New See also:York, U.S.A., on the See also:Oriskany See also:Creek, about 9 m. S.W. of See also:Utica. Pop. (1890) 1269; (1900) 1340; (1905) 1315; (1910) 1236. It is served by the New York, See also:Ontario & Western railway, and is connected with Utica by an electric See also:line. Several See also:fine See also:mineral springs in the vicinity have given Clinton some reputation as a See also:health resort. There are See also:iron mines, blast furnaces, and iron smelters. Clinton is the seat of See also:Hamilton See also:College (non-sectarian), whichwas opened as the Hamilton Oneida See also:Academy in 5798, and was chartered under its See also:present name in 1812. It was founded by the Rev. See also:Samuel Kirkland (1741-1808), a missionary among the Oneida See also:Indians; its corner-See also:stone was laid by See also:Baron See also:Steuben; its shade trees were furnished by See also:Thomas See also:Jefferson; and its name was received from See also:Alexander Hamilton, one of its See also:early trustees. It had in 1907-1908 20 instructors, 178 students, and a library of 47,000 volumes and 30,000 See also:pamphlets. At Clinton are also excellent See also:minor See also:schools.

Litchfield See also:Observatory is connected with the college, and was See also:long in See also:charge of the well-known astronomer, See also:Christian H. F. See also:Peters (1813-189o), who discovered here more than 40 asteroids and made extensive investigations concerning comets. The village was settled about 1786 by pioneers from New See also:England, was named in See also:honour of See also:George Clinton, and was incorporated in 1842.
