William Horsley, the musician, and See also:grand-See also:nephew of See also:Sir See also:Augustus Callcott, was See also:born in See also:London, on the 29th of See also:January 1817. He studied See also:painting in the See also:Academy See also:schools, and in 1836 exhibited " The See also:Pride of the See also:Village " (See also:Vernon See also:Gallery) at the Royal Academy. This was followed by numerous genre pictures at subsequent exhibitions up to 1893, the best known of these being " Malvolio," " L'See also:Allegro and i1 Penseroso " (painted for the See also:Prince See also:Consort), " Le Jour See also:des Morts," " A See also:Scene from See also:Don Quixote," &c. In 1843 his See also:cartoon of " St See also:Augustine See also:Preaching" won a See also:prize in the See also:Westminster See also:- HALL

Henry V. assuming the See also:Crown " and " Satan surprised at the See also:Ear of See also:Eve." In 1864 he became R.A., and in 1882 was elected treasurer, a See also:post which he held till 1897, when he resigned and became a " retired Academician." Mr Horsley had much to do with organizing the See also:winter exhibitions of " Old Masters " at See also:Burlington House after 1870. When, during the 'eighties, the example of the See also:French See also:Salon began to affect the Academy exhibitors, and paintings of the nude became the See also:fashion, he protested against the innovation, and his attitude caused See also:Punch to give him the punning See also:sobriquet of " Mr J. C (lothes) Horsley." He died on the 18th of See also:October 1903. His son, Sir See also:Victor Horsley (b. 1857), became famous as a surgeon and neuropathologist, and a prominent supporter of the cause of experimental, See also:research.
