TAIN . a royal and See also:

police See also:burgh of the See also:county of See also:Ross and Cromartv. See also:Scotland. Pop. (1901) 2076. It is situated on rising ground within a mile of the See also:southern See also:shore of See also:Dornoch See also:Firth, 25; M. N.E. of See also:Dingwall by the Highland Railway. The name, of which the Tene, Tayne and Thane are older forms. is derived from the Icelandic thing, " See also:assembly " or " See also:court." Among the See also:principal buildings are the See also:town See also:hall, court See also:house, public hall, See also:Easter Ross See also:combination poorhouse, and the See also:academy (opened in 1812). The See also:industries include distilling, the making of aerated See also:waters, and woollen manufactures, and the town is important as a See also:market and • distributing centre. The rainfall is one of the lowest in the See also:kingdom. Duthac (locally called Duthus), a See also:saint of the 11th See also:century, is believed to have been a native, and the old ruined See also:chapel near the station is supposed to have been his See also:shrine. To the collegiate See also:church of St Duthus, a Decorated See also:building, founded by See also:James III. in 1471, James IV. made several pilgrimages in See also:penance for his See also:father's See also:death. The building was used as the See also:parish church till 1815, when it See also:fell into disrepair, but it was restored between 1871 and 1876.

Patrick See also:Hamilton, the See also:martyr, and See also:Thomas Hog (1628-1692), the Scottish divine, for some See also:time a prisoner on the See also:Bass. Three and a See also:half See also:miles S.E. are the remains of the See also:Early See also:English See also:abbey of Fearn, founded at Edderton in 1230 by See also:Farquhar, 1st See also:earl of Ross, and transferred hither in 1338. The See also:chancel, See also:nave and two See also:side chapels exist, and it still serves as the parish church. Patrick Hamilton became titular See also:abbot in 1517, and after his martyrdom the abbey was added to the bishopric of Ross.
