He was educated at See also:Shrewsbury School, and at See also:Christ See also:Church, See also:Oxford. He took his degree in See also:modern See also:history in 1877, and was called to the See also:bar at the Inner See also:Temple in 1881, joining the Oxford See also:circuit. He had been practising as a See also:barrister for eight years when he made his reputation as a novelist by a See also:series of romances dealing with See also:French history: The See also:House of the See also:Wolf (1889), A See also:Gentleman of See also:France (1893), Under the Red Robe (1894), See also:Memoirs of a See also:Minister of France (1895), &c. Among his later novels were: Shrewsbury (1897), The See also:Castle See also:Inn (1898), See also:Sophia (190o), See also:Count See also:Hannibal (1901), In See also:King's Byways (1902), The See also:Long See also:Night (1903), The See also:Abbess of Vlaye (1904), Starvecrow See also:Farm (1905), Chippinge (1906).
