The organic remains of the London See also:Clay attracted particular attention, and about the See also:year 1836 he and six other workers founded " The London Clay See also:Club "—the members comprising Dr Bowerbank, See also:Frederick E. See also:Edwards (x799-1875), author of The See also:Eocene See also:Mollusca (Palaeontograph. See also:Soc.), Searles V. See also:Wood, See also:John See also:Morris, See also:Alfred See also:White (zoologist), N. T. Wetherell, surgeon of See also:Highgate (1800-1875), and James de Carle See also:Sowerby. In 184o Bowerbank published A History of the Fossil Fruits and Seeds of the London Clay, and two years later he was elected F.R.S. In 1847 he suggested the See also:establishment of a society for the publication of undescribed See also:British Fossils, and thus originated the Palaeontographical Society. From 1844 until 1864 he did much to encourage a love of natural See also:science by being " at See also:home " every See also:Monday evening at his See also:residence in See also:Park See also:Street, See also:Islington, and afterwards in Highbury See also:Grove, where the treasures of his museum, his4microscopes, and his See also:personal assistance were at the service of every See also:earnest student. In the study of See also:sponges he became specially interested, and he was author of A Monographof the British Spongiadae in 4 vols., published by the See also:Ray Society, 1864-1882.

He retired in 1864 to St Leonards, where he died on the 8th of See also:

March 1877.
