GRISELDA , a heroine of See also:

romance. She is said to have been the wife of See also:Walter, See also:marquis of Saluces or See also:Saluzzo, in the rah See also:century, and her misfortunes were considered to belong to See also:history when they were handled by See also:Boccaccio and See also:Petrarch, although the See also:probability is that Boccaccio borrowed his narrative from a Provencal See also:fabliau. He included it in the recitations of the tenth See also:day (Decamerone), and must have written it about 1350. Petrarch related it in a Latin See also:letter in 1373, and his See also:translation formed the basis of much of the later literature. The letter was printed by See also:Ulrich Zel about 1470, and often subsequently. It was translated into See also:French as La See also:Patience de 3 See also:Sir See also:Richard See also:Southey (18o9–19o1) was the son of one of the emigrants from the See also:west of See also:England to Cape See also:Colony (182o). He organized and commanded a See also:corps of Guides in the Kaffir See also:war of 1834-35, and was with Sir Harry See also:Smith at Boomplaats (1848). From 1864 to 1872 he was colonial secretary at the Cape. He gave up his See also:appointment in Griqualand West in 1875, and lived thereafter in retirement. In 1891 he was created a K.C.M.G. Griselidis and printed at Brehan-Loudeac in 1484, and its popularity is shown by the number of See also:early See also:editions quoted by See also:Brunet (See also:Manuel du libraire, s.v. Petrarca).

See also:Chaucer followed Petrarch's version in the See also:Canterbury Tales. See also:Ralph See also:Radcliffe, who flourished under See also:Henry VIII., is said to have written a See also:play on the subject, and the story was dramatized by See also:Thomas See also:Dekker, Henry See also:Chettle and W.
