Entering the See also:army in 1864, he served in See also:Mozambique, and in 1869 took See also:part in an expedition against tribes in revolt on the See also:lower See also:Zambezi. In 1877 he and Captains Capello and Ivens of the Portuguese See also:navy were sent on an expedition to See also:south central Africa. The explorers See also:left See also:Benguella in See also:November 1877 for the interior, but Serpa Pinto soon parted from his colleagues, who went See also:north, while Serpa Pinto continued See also:east. He crossed the Kwando in See also:June 1878, and in See also:August reached Lialui, the See also:Barotse See also:capital on the Zambezi, where he received help from the Rev. F. Coillard which enabled him to continue his See also:journey down the See also:river to the See also:Victoria Falls, whence he turned south, arriving at See also:Pretoria on the 12th of See also:February 1879. He was the See also:fourth explorer to See also:traverse Africa from See also:west to east, and was the first to See also:lay down with approximate accuracy the route between Bihe and Lialui. Among other rewards the Royal See also:Geographical Society of See also:London awarded him (1881) the Founder's See also:medal. The See also:account of his travels appeared in See also:English under the See also:title How I crossed Africa (2 vols., London, 1881). In 1884 he at-tempted, with less success, the exploration of the regions between Mozambique and See also:Lake See also:Nyasa. Appointed See also:governor of
Mozambique in 1889, he organized an expedition with the See also:object of securing for See also:Portugal the See also:Shire See also:highlands and neighbouring regions, but the vigorous See also:action of the See also:British -agents (See also: H. See also:Johnston) frustrated this See also:design (see AFRICA, § 5). Shortly afterwards Serpa Pinto returned to See also:Lisbon and was promoted to the See also:rank of See also:colonel.
