TEMESVAR , the See also:

capital of the See also:county of Temes, See also:Hungary, 188 m. S.E. of See also:Budapest by See also:rail. Pop. (T9oo) 53,033. It lies Ti on the navigable Bega See also:canal and on the See also:river $ega, and consists of the inner See also:town, formerly strongly fortified, and of four out-lying suburbs. Several parks have been laid out on the site of the broad See also:glacis which formerly separated Temesvar from its suburbs, which are now See also:united with it by broad avenues. Temesvar is the seat of a See also:Roman See also:Catholic and a See also:Greek Orthodox See also:bishop. Amongst its, See also:principal buildings are the Roman Catholic See also:cathedral, built (1735–57) by Maria See also:Theresa; the Greek Orthodox cathedral; a See also:castle built by Hunyady Janos in 1442, now used as an See also:arsenal; the town and county See also:hall, the museum and large See also:barracks. In the principal square rises a See also:Gothic See also:column, 40 ft. high, erected by the See also:Emperor See also:Francis See also:Joseph in 1851 to commemorate the successful resistance of the town to the See also:siege of 107 days laid by the Hungarian revolutionary See also:army in 1849. Temesvar is the most important centre of See also:commerce and See also:industry of See also:south Hungary, and carries on a brisk See also:trade in See also:grain, See also:flour, See also:spirits and horses. Its See also:industrial establishments include factories for See also:tobacco, See also:cloth, matches, See also:leather, artificial manure, besides breweries and distilleries. Temesvar is an old town, and although destroyed by the See also:Tatars in 1242, it was a populous See also:place at the beginning of the 14th See also:century, and was strongly fortified by See also:King See also:Charles See also:Robert of See also:Anjou, who resided here several years.

family had also their See also:residence bere. In 1514 the See also:peasant See also:leader, See also:Stephan See also:Dozsa, was defeated by the Transylvanian voivod, See also:John Zapolya, near Temesvar, captured and executed. Unsuccessfully besieged by the See also:Turks in 1552, it was captured by them in the following See also:year after a heroic resistance. It remained in their hands until 1716, when it was liberated by See also:Prince See also:Eugene of See also:Savoy. New strong fortifications were erected, and the town See also:grew steadily in importance, se;ving as the capital of the whole See also:Banat. It endured another siege in 1849, when it resisted successfully the attacks of a Hungarian revolutionary army.
