He became known as a social and See also:financial reformer and a See also:constant assailant in See also:parliament of all sorts of abuses. It was on his See also:motion in 1805 that See also:Lord See also:Melville was impeached for financial maladministration of the See also:navy, and he conducted the See also:case for the See also:prosecution. His Poor See also:Law See also:bill in 1807, an elaborate See also:Radical See also:scheme, came to nothing. Whitbread continued to be a constant See also:speaker in parliament, and the See also:principal representative of Liberal See also:criticism, a See also:monument of opposition See also:tactics. He opposed the regency, championed the princess of See also:Wales, and led the See also:peace party; and the caricaturists were busy with his See also:personality. In 1809 he became chairman of the See also:committee for rebuilding See also:Drury See also:Lane See also:theatre, and for some See also:time he was immersed in controversies connected with it, which eventually seem to have unstrung his mind, for he committed See also:suicide on the 6th of See also:July 1815. The Whitbread See also:influence in Liberal politics continued to be very strong in Bedfordshire in later generations, his son See also:William See also:Henry (from 1818 to 1837) and See also:grandson Samuel (from 1852 to 1895) representing See also:Bedford for many years.
