William See also:Hunter. He practised as a surgeon at See also:Chester and Warrington. Finally,he went to See also:Leyden, took the degree of M.D. (1780), and in 1784 established himself as a doctor in See also:Yarmouth. In 1792 he re-moved to London, where he practised as a consulting physician. But he concerned himself more with the advocacy of See also:liberty of See also:conscience than with his professional duties, and he began at an See also:early See also:period to devote himself to See also:literary pursuits. In See also:con-junction with his See also:sister, Mrs See also:Barbauld (q.v.), he published a popular See also:series of volumes entitled Evenings at See also:Home (6 vols., 1792-1795), excellently adapted for elementary See also:family See also:reading, which were translated into almost every See also:European See also:language. In 1798 Dr Aikin retired from professional See also:life and devoted himself with See also:great See also:industry to various literary undertakings, among which his See also:General See also:Biography (to vols., 1799-1815) holds a conspicuous See also:place. Besides these, he published Biog. See also:Memoirs of Medicine (178o) ; Lives of John See also:Selden and See also:Archbishop See also:- USHER (O. Fr. ussier, uissier, mod. huissier, from Lat. ostiarius, a door-keeper, ostium, doorway, entrance, os, mouth)

Usher (1812) and other See also:works. He edited the Monthly See also:Magazine from 1796 to 1807, and conducted a See also:paper called the See also:Athenaeum from 1807 to 1809, when it was discontinued. Aikin died in 1822.
His daughter, See also:LucY AIKIN (1781-1864), born at Warrington on the 6th of See also:November 1781, had some repute as a See also:historical writer. After producing various books for the See also:young, and a novel, Lorimer (1814), she published in 1818 her Memoirs of the See also:Court of See also:Queen See also:Elizabeth, which passed through several See also:editions. This was followed by Memoirs of the Court of See also:- JAMES
