He took a first class in moderations in 1862 and in Literae humaniores in 1863, and was See also:Pusey and Ellerton See also:scholar in 1861. From 1864 to 1866 he was See also:fellow and See also:tutor of Merton College. In 1866 he became See also:professor of moral See also:philosophy in the university of Glasgow, and in 1893 succeeded See also:Benjamin See also:Jowett as See also:master of Balliol. With See also:Thomas See also:Hill See also:Green he founded in See also:England a school of orthodox neo-Hegelianism (see See also:HEGEL, ad fin.), and through his pupils he exerted a far-reaching See also:influence on See also:English philosophy and See also:theology. Owing to failing See also:health he gave up his lectures in 1904, and in May 1go6 resigned his mastership, in which he was succeeded by See also:James See also:Leigh See also:Strachan-See also:Davidson, who had previously for some See also:time, as See also:senior tutor and fellow, See also:borne the See also:chief See also:burden of college See also:administration. Dr Caird received the honorary degree of D.C.L. in 1892; he was made a corresponding member of the See also:French See also:Academy of Moral and See also:Political See also:Science and a fellow of the British Academy. His publications include Philosophy of See also:Kant (1878); See also:Critical Philosophy of Kant (1889); See also:Religion and Social Philosophy of See also:Comte (1885); Essays on Literature and Philosophy (1892); See also:Evolution of Religion (See also:Gifford Lectures, 1891–1892); Evolution of Theology in the See also:Greek Philosophers (1904) ; and he is represented in this See also:encyclopaedia by the See also:article on See also:CARTESIANISM.
