capital of See also:Oklahoma, U.S.A., and the See also:county-seat of See also:Logan county, extending on both sides of Cottonwoodcreek, and lying one mile See also:south of the Cimarron See also:river. Pop. (189o) 5333, (1900) ro,006, (1907) 11,652 (2871 negroes); (1910) 11,654. It is served by the See also:Atchison, See also:Topeka & See also:Santa Fe, the See also:Chicago, See also:Rock See also:Island & Pacific, the See also:Missouri, See also:Kansas & See also:Texas, the Fort See also:Smith & Western, and the St See also:Louis, El See also:Reno & Western See also:railways. The See also:city is situated about 940 ft. above the See also:sea, in a See also:prairie region devoted largely to stock-raising and the cultivation of See also:Indian See also:corn, See also:wheat, See also:cotton and various fruits, particularly peaches. Guthrie is one of the headquarters of the Federal courts in the See also:state, the other being See also:Muskogee. The See also:principal public buildings at Guthrie are the state Capitol, the Federal See also:building, the City See also:hall, the See also:Carnegie library, the Methodist See also:hospital and a large Masonic See also:temple. Among the See also:schools are St See also:Joseph's See also:Academy and a state school for the See also:deaf and dumb. Guthrie has a considerable See also:trade with the surrounding See also:country and has cotton gins, a cotton compress, and foundries and See also:machine shops; among its manufactures are cotton-See also:seed oil, cotton goods, See also:flour, cereals, See also:lumber, cigars, brooms and See also:furniture. The See also:total value of the factory product in 1905 was $1,200,662. The See also:municipality owns and operates the See also:water-See also:works. The city was founded in 1889, when Oklahoma was opened for See also:settlement; in 1890 it was made the capital of the Territory, and in 1907 when Oklahoma was made a state, it became the state capital.
