S.W. of See also:Tonbridge. Pop. (1901), 1678. The village is remarkable for some old houses, including a timbered See also:house of the 15th See also:century, and for a noted factory of See also:cricket implements. The See also:church, chiefly See also:late Perpendicular, contains a large number of monuments of the See also:Sidney See also:family and an effigy of See also:Sir See also:Stephen de Penchester, See also:Warden of the Cinque Ports in the See also:time of See also:Edward I. Penshurst See also:Place is celebrated as the See also:home of the Sidney family. Anciently the See also:residence of Sir Stephen de Penchester, Penshurst was granted to See also:Henry. VIII.'s See also:chamberlain, Sir See also:William Sidney, whose See also:grandson, Sir See also:Philip Sidney, was See also:born here in 1554. It passed to Sir Philip's younger See also:brother See also:Robert, who in 1618 was created See also:earl of See also:Leicester. On the See also:death of the seventh earl in 1743 the estates devolved upon his niece See also:Elizabeth, whose only See also:child married Sir Bysshe See also:Shelley of See also:Castle See also:Goring. Their son was created a See also:baronet in 1818 as Sir See also:John Shelley-Sidney, and his son was created See also:Baron de L'Isle and See also:Dudley in 1835.
