He was not yet ten years old when he was sent to See also:Catherine See also:Hall, See also:Cambridge, having by this See also:time a See also:good knowledge of Latin, See also:Greek and See also:Hebrew. He obtained a fellowship at St See also:John's See also:College, and was elected an F.R.S. in 1687. Wotton is chiefly remembered for his See also:share in the controversy about the respective merits of See also:ancient and See also:modern learning. In his Reflections upon Ancient and Modern Learning (1694, and again 1697) he took the See also:part of the moderns, although in a See also:fair and judicial spirit, and was attacked by See also:Swift in the See also:Battle of the Books. During some of his later years Wotton resided in See also:Wales and gave himself to the study of See also:Celtic, making a See also:translation of the See also:laws of Howel Dda, which was published after his See also:death (1730). Having taken See also:holy orders, he was a prebend of See also:Salisbury from 1705 until his death at Buxted, See also:Essex, on the 13th of See also:February 1727. Wotton wrote a See also:History of See also:Rome (1701) and See also:Miscellaneous Discoveries See also:relating to the Traditions and Usages of the See also:Scribes and See also:Pharisees (1718).
