WOTTON, See also:NICHOLAS (c. 1497–1567) , See also:English diplomatist, was a son of See also:Sir See also:Robert Wotton of See also:Boughton See also:Malherbe, See also:Kent, and a descendant of Nicholas Wotton, See also:lord See also:mayor of See also:London in 1415 and 1430, and member of See also:parliament for the See also:city from 1406 to 1429. He See also:early became See also:vicar of Boughton Malherbe and of See also:Sutton See also:Valence, and later of Ivychurch, Kent; but, desiring a more worldly career, he entered the service of See also:Cuthbert See also:Tunstall, See also:bishop of London. Having helped to draw up the Institution of a See also:Christian See also:Man, Wotton in 1539 went to arrange the See also:marriage between See also:Henry VIII. and See also:Anne of See also:Cleves and the See also:union of See also:Protestant princes which was to be the See also:complement of this union. He crossed over to See also:England with the royal See also:bride, but, unlike See also:Thomas See also:Cromwell, he did not lose the royal favour when the See also:king repudiated Anne, and in 1541, having already refused the bishopric of See also:Hereford, he became See also:dean of See also:Canterbury and in 1544 dean of See also:York. In 1543 he went on See also:diplomatic business to the Nether-lands, and for the next See also:year or two he had much intercourse with the See also:emperor .See also:Charles V. He helped to conclude the treaty of See also:peace between England and See also:France in 1546, and was See also:resident See also:ambassador in France from 1546 to 1549. Henry VIII. made Wotton an executor of his will and See also:left him £300, and in 1549, under See also:Edward VI., he became a secretary of See also:state, but he only held this See also:post for about a year. In 1550 he was again sent as See also:envoy to Charles V., and he was ambassador to France during the reign of See also:Mary, doing valuable See also:work in that capacity. He left France in 1557, but in 1558 he was again in that See also:country, helping to arrange the preliminaries of the treaty of Cateau Cambresis. In 156o he signed the treaty of See also:Edinburgh on behalf of See also:Elizabeth, and he had again visited the See also:Netherlands before his See also:death in London on the 26th of See also:January 1567. His See also:brother, Sir Edward Wotton (1489—1551), was made treasurer of See also:Calais in 1540, and was one of those who took See also:part in the overthrow of the See also:protector See also:Somerset.

His son, Thomas Wotton (1521—1587) was the See also:

father of Sir Henry Wotton (q.v.).
