At an See also:early See also:age he became clerk in a See also:store at Guilford, and in 1811 he entered a banking-See also:house in New See also:York. Raving made the acquaintance of See also:Joseph Rodman See also:Drake, in 1819 he assisted him under the See also:signature of "Croaker junior" in contributing to the New York Evening See also:Post the humorous See also:series of " Croaker Papers." In 1821 he published his longest poem, Fanny, a See also:satire on See also:local politics and fashions in the measure of See also:Byron's See also:Don Juan. He visited See also:Europe in 1822-1823, and after his return published anonymously in 1827 See also:Alnwick See also:Castle, with other Poems. From 1832 to 1841 he was confidential See also:agent of John See also:Jacob See also:Astor, who named him one of the trustees of the Astor library. In 1864 he published in the New York See also:Ledger a poem of 300 lines entitled " See also:Young See also:America." He died at Guilford, on the 19th of See also:November 1867. The poems of Halleck are written with See also:great care and finish, and See also:manifest the See also:possession of a See also:fine sense of See also:harmony and of genial and elevated sentiments.
