WARDLAW, See also:HENRY (d. 1440) , Scottish See also:prelate, was a son of See also:Sir See also:Andrew Wardlaw and a See also:nephew of See also:Walter Wardlaw (d. 1390), See also:bishop of See also:Glasgow, who is said to have been made a See also:cardinal by the See also:anti-See also:pope See also:Clement VII. in 1381. Educated at the See also:universities of See also:Oxford and of See also:Paris, Henry Wardlaw returned to See also:Scotland about 1385, and owing to his influential connexions received many benefices in the See also:Church. He passed some See also:time at See also:Avignon, and it was whilst he was residing at the papal See also:court that he was chosen bishop of St See also:Andrews, being consecrated in 1403. Returning to Scotland he acted as See also:tutor to the future See also:king, See also:James I., and finished the See also:work of restoring his See also:cathedral. Then having helped to bring about the See also:release of James from his captivity in See also:England, he crowned this king in May 1424, and afterwards acted as one of his See also:principal advisers. He appears to have been an excellent bishop, although he tried to suppress the teaching of See also:John Wycliffe by burning its See also:advocates. He died on the 6th of See also:April 1440. Wardlaw's See also:chief See also:title to fame is the fact that he was the founder of the university of St Andrews, the first Scottish university. He issued the See also:charter of See also:foundation in See also:February 1411, and the privileges of the new seat of learning were confirmed by a See also:bull of Pope See also:Benedict XIII., dated the 28th of See also:August 1413.
