After studying at See also:Gottingen and See also:Bonn from 186o to 1863, he lectured at several gymnasia and at the university of See also:Konigsberg. In 1876 he was appointed extraordinary See also:professor of classical See also:philology at See also:Kiel, and See also:ordinary professor in 1881. In 1892 he accepted a professorship at See also:Halle, where he died on the 5th of See also:March 1907. He frequently visited See also:England, and was intimately acquainted with leading See also:British scholars. He received an honorary degree from See also:Dublin University in 1892, and his readiness to See also:place the results of his labours at the disposal of others, together with the See also:courtesy and kindliness of his disposition, won the respect of all who knew him. Blass is chiefly known for his See also:works in connexion with the study of See also:Greek See also:oratory: See also:Die griechische Beredsamkeit von See also:Alexander bis auf See also:Augustus (1865) ; Die attische Beredsamkeit (1868—1880; 2nd ed., 1887—1898), his greatest See also:work; See also:editions for the Teubner See also:series of See also:Andocides (1880), See also:Antiphon (1881), See also:Hypereides (1881, 1894), See also:Demosthenes (See also:Dindorf's ed., 1885), Isocrates (1886), See also:Dinarchus (1888), Demosthenes (Rehdantz' ed., 1893), See also:Aeschines (1896), See also:Lycurgus, Leocrates (1902); Die Rhythmen der attischen Kunstprosa (1901); Die Rhythmen der asianischen and romischen Kunstprosa (1905). St See also:John See also:Thackeray, 1905); Hermeneutik and Kritik and Palaographie, Buchwesen, and Handschriftenkunde (vol. i. of See also:Miller's Handbuch der klassischen Altertumswissenschaft, 1891); Uber die Aussprache des Griechischen (1888; Eng. trans. by W. J. Purton, 1890); Die Interpolationen in der Odyssee (1904); contributions to Collitz's Sammlung der griechischen Dialektinschriften; editions of the texts of certain portions of the New Testament (Gospels and Acts). His last work was an. edition of the Choephori (1906).
