He entered See also:Westminster school, and in 1759 was elected to a scholarship at Trinity. See also:College, See also:Cambridge. He graduated in 1769, with the See also:rank of third wrangler and first See also:Smith''s prizeman. Subsequently he became a See also:fellow and a See also:tutor of the college, and in 1776 was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of See also:London. In the year 1784 he See also:left Cambridge, and soon afterwards received from See also:William See also:Pitt the See also:office of a patent searcher of the customs, which required but little attendance, and enabled him to de-See also:vote a considerable portion of his See also:time to his See also:special studies. He died in See also:July -1807. Atwood's published See also:works, exclusive of papers contributed to the Philosophical Transactions, for one of which he obtained the See also:Copley See also:medal, are as follows:—Analysis of a Course of Lectures on the Principles of Natural See also:Philosophy (Cambridge, 1784); See also:Treatise on the Rectilinear See also:Motion and Rotation of Bodies (Cambridge, 1784), which gives some interesting experiments, by means of which See also:mechanical truths can be ocularly exhibited and demonstrated, and describes the See also:machine, since called by Atwood's name, for verifying experimentally the See also:laws of See also:simple See also:acceleration of motion; See also:Review of the Statutes and Ordinances of See also:Assize which have been established in See also:England from the 4th year of See also:King See also:John, 1202, to the 37th of his See also:present See also:Majesty (London, 1801), a See also:work of some See also:historical See also:research; Dissertation on the Construction and Properties of See also:Arches (London, 18o1), with supplement, pt. i., 18or, pt. ii., 1804, an elaborate work, now completely superseded.
