He held the rectories of See also:Middle and See also:Whitchurch in See also:Shropshire, but the duties were performed by a See also:proxy. He succeeded his See also:brother (see above) in the earldom in 1823, and spent the latter See also:part of his See also:life in See also:Paris. He was a See also:fair See also:scholar, and a zealous naturalist and antiquarian. When he died in See also:February 1829 the earldom became See also:extinct. He bequeathed to the See also:British Museum the valuable Egerton See also:MSS. dealing with the literature of See also:France and See also:Italy, and also £12,000. He also See also:left £8000 at the disposal of the See also:president of the Royal Society, to be paid to the author or authors who might be selected to write and publish l000 copies of a See also:treatise " On the See also:Power, See also:Wisdom and Goodness of See also:God, as manifested in the Creation." Mr See also:Davies See also:Gilbert, who then filled the See also:office, selected eight persons, each to under-take a See also:branch of this subject, and each to receive £1000 as his See also:reward, together with any benefit that might accrue from the See also:sale of his See also:work, according to the will of the testator.
