He served for a while as a saddler's apprentice, and after 1826 devoted himself to the life of a professional See also:guide and hunter. He was hunter for the See also:garrison at See also:Bent's Fort on the See also:Arkansas See also:river in what is now Bent county, See also:Colorado, from 1832 to 1840, and accompanied See also:John C. See also:Fremont on his exploring expeditions of 1842 and 1843-1844, and on his See also:California expedition in 1845-1846. Carson took See also:part in the Mexican See also:War, and, after the See also:rush to the Pacific See also:Coast began, engaged as a guide to See also:convoy emigrants and drovers across the plains and mountains. In 1854 he became See also:Indian See also:agent at Taos, New See also:Mexico, in which position, through his knowledge of the Indian traits and See also:language, he was able to exercise for many years a restraining See also:influence over the warlike Apaches and other tribes. During the See also:Civil War he rendered invaluable services to the Federal cause in the See also:south-See also:west as See also:chief scout in See also:charge of the various bodies of irregular scouts and rangers participating in the See also:constant border warfare that characterized the conflict in that part of the See also:Union. In See also:March 1865 he was breveted brigadier-See also:general of See also:volunteers for gallantry in the See also:battle of Valverde (on the 21st of See also:February 1862) and for distinguished services in New Mexico, and after the war resumed his position as Indian agent, which he held until his See also:death at Fort See also:Lyon, Colorado, on the 23rd of May 1868. " Kit " Carson occupies in the latter See also:period of American pioneer See also:history a position somewhat similar to that held by See also:Daniel See also:Boone and See also:David See also:Crockett at an earlier period, as the typical frontier
