After studying See also:law for six years, he became a See also:fellow at St See also:John's See also:College, Cambridge, in 1564. He took a leading See also:part in the "vestiarian" controversy, and persuaded the college to discard the See also:surplice. In consequencehe was expelled from St. John's for a See also:time, but in 1567 he became See also:Hebrew lecturer and preacher there. After See also:standing unsuccessfully for the headship of the college in 1569, he became See also:chaplain to the See also:earl of See also:Leicester, and received from him the livings of Warley, in See also:Essex, and Dennington in See also:Suffolk. In 178 he was elected See also:master of See also:Pembroke See also:Hall, Cambridge. As a Puritan controversialist he was remarkably active; in ,58o the See also:bishop of See also:Ely appointed him to defend See also:puritanism against the See also:Roman Catholics, See also:Thomas See also:Watson, ex-bishop of See also:Lincoln (1513-1584), and John See also:Feckenham, formerly See also:abbot of See also:Westminster, and in 1581 he was one of the disputants with the Jesuit, See also:Edmund See also:Campion, while in 1582 he was among the See also:clergy selected by the privy See also:council to argue against any papist. His numerous polemical writings include A Defense of the sincere true See also:Translations of the holie Scriptures into the See also:English tong (London, 1583), and confutations of Thomas See also:Staple-ton (1535-1598), See also:Cardinal See also:Allen and other Roman See also:Catholic controversialists.
