He was promoted See also:captain in 1844 and served under Generals See also:Taylor and See also:Scott in the Mexican See also:War, winning the See also:brevet of See also:major for gallantry in See also:action in See also:March 1847 and subsequently that of lieut.-See also:colonel. After the war he served as a substantive major under Colonel See also:Sidney See also:Johnston and Lieut.-Colonel See also:Robert See also:Lee in the and U.S. cavalry, and for some See also:time before 1856 he was engaged in compiling the See also:official See also:manual of See also:infantry See also:drill and See also:tactics which, familiarly called " Hardee's Tactics," afterwards formed the See also:text-See also:book for the infantry See also:arm in both the Federal and the Confederate armies. From 1856 to 1861 he was commandant of West Point, resigning his See also:commission on the See also:secession of his See also:state in the latter See also:year. Entering the Confederate service as a colonel, he was shortly promoted brigadier-See also:general. He-distinguished himself very greatly by his See also:tactical leadership on the See also:field of See also:Shiloh, and was immediately promoted major-general. As a See also:corps See also:commander he fought under General See also:Bragg at See also:Perryville and See also:Stone See also:River, and for his distinguished services in these battles was promoted See also:lieutenant-general. He served in the latter See also:part of the See also:campaign of 1863 under Bragg and in that of 1864 under J. E. Johnston. When the latter officer was supersededby See also:Hood, Hardee was relieved at his own See also:request, and for the See also:remainder of the war he served in the Carolinas.

When the See also:

Civil War came to an end in 1865 he retired to his See also:plantation near See also:Selma, See also:Alabama. He died at Wytheville, See also:Virginia, on the 6th of November 1873.
