DOUNE , a See also:

police See also:burgh of See also:Perthshire, See also:Scotland, 84 m. N.W. of See also:Stirling by the Caledonian railway. Pop. (1901) 930. It is situated on the See also:left See also:bank of the Teith, here crossed by the See also:bridge built in 1535 by See also:Robert Spittal, tailor to See also:James IV. The See also:town was once famous for its pistols and sporrans (as the purses worn with the See also:kilt are called), which were in See also:great See also:request by the clansmen of the See also:Highlands. Doune See also:Castle, now in ruins, occupies a commanding position on the Teith, at the point where it is joined by the Ardoch. It is believed to have been built by Murdoch, 2nd See also:duke of See also:Albany (d. 1425), and was sometimes a See also:residence of the sovereigns, among them James V. and See also:Queen See also:Mary. A See also:nephew of Rob See also:Roy held it for See also:Prince Charlie, and it figures in See also:Scott's Waverley. It belongs to the See also:earl of See also:Moray (See also:Murray), who derives from it his See also:title of See also:Lord Doune, and was the See also:home of James See also:Stewart, the "bonnie earl "of Moray, murdered at Donibristle in See also:Fife by the earl of See also:Huntly (1592). The braes of Doune See also:lie to the See also:north-See also:west of the town and extend towards Uam See also:Var.

Deanston (pop. 652),1 m. S.W. of Doune, on the right bank of the Teith, was the See also:

scene of the labours of James See also:Smith (1789-185o), the agricultural engineer, who was also manager of the See also:cotton See also:mills established there in 1785. On his See also:farm Smith carried out his experiments in deep and thorough draining, and alsoinvented a See also:reaping See also:machine, the, subsoil plough and numerous other valuable appliances.
