His See also:father, who was of a See also:German See also:family (the name was originally Fahrholz), was a See also:tobacco manufacturer, and for some years Fairholt himself was employed in the business. For a See also:time he was a See also:drawing-See also:master, afterwards a See also:scene-painter, and in 1835 he became assistant to S. Sly, the wood engraver. Some See also:pen FAIRUZABADI T33 and See also:ink copies made by him of figures from See also:Hogarth's plates led to his being employed by See also:Charles See also:Knight on several of his illustrated publications. His first published See also:literary See also:work was a contribution to See also:Hone's See also:Year-See also:Book in 183x. His See also:life was one of almost uninterrupted quiet labour, carried on until within a few days of See also:death. Several See also:works on civic pageantry and some collections of See also:ancient unpublished songs and dialogues were edited by him for the See also:Percy Society in 1842. In 1844 he was elected See also:fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. He published an edition of the dramatic works of See also:Lyly in 1856. His See also:principal See also:independent works are Tobacco, its See also:History and Association (1859); See also:Gog and Magog (r86o); Up the See also:Nile and Honie Again (1862); many articles and serials contributed to the See also:Art See also:Journal, some of which were afterwards separately published, as See also:Costume in See also:England (1846); See also:Dictionary of Terms in Art (1854)_ These works are illustrated by numerous cuts, See also:drawn on the wood by his own See also:hand. His See also:pencil was also employed in illustrating See also:Evans's Coins of the Ancient Britons, See also:Madden's Jewish Coinage, Halliwell's See also:folio See also:Shakespeare and his See also:Sir See also:John Maundeville, See also:Roach See also:Smith's Richborough, the Miscellanea Graphica of See also:Lord Londesborough, and many other works.

He died on the 3rd of See also:

April 1866. His books See also:relating to Shakespeare were bequeathed to the library at, See also:Stratford-on-See also:Avon; those on civic pageantry (between 200 and 300 volumes) to the Society of Antiquaries; his old prints and works on costume to the See also:British Museum; his See also:general library he di sired to be sold and the proceeds devoted to the Literary Fund.
