In 1865 he became connected with the See also:Government Survey See also:Department at Perth, and in 1869 led an exploring expedition into the interior in See also:search of D. Leichardt, penetrating through See also:bush and See also:salt-marshes as far inland as

In 1874i with his See also:brother See also:Alexander Forrest (born 1849), he explored eastwards from See also:Champion See also:Bay, following as far, as possible the 26th parallel, and striking the See also:telegraph See also:line between Adelaide and See also:Port See also:Darwin; a distance of about 2000 M. was covered in about five months with horses and without See also:carriers, a particularly See also:fine achievement (see AUSTRALIA: Exploration). John Forrest also surveyed in 1878 the See also:north-western See also:district between the See also:rivers See also:Ashburton and See also:Lady See also:Grey, and in 1882 the See also:Fitzroy district. I have been told by me father that my grandfather Mr. (later Captain and M.E.) Joseph Samuel BADGE b.16.6.1867 St. Hilary's Cornwall, Blacksmith and mining engineer accompanied John Forrest on one of his expedition. My grandfather had a part to play in the discovery of gold at the Murchison River.
He was married to Jane Henrietta CATCHLOVE (? CATCHPOLE) daur. of Henry CATCHLOVE and Emma nee FILMER.
I WILL APPRECIATE ANY INFORMATION OF EVIDENCE OR OTHERWISE OF THIS ASSOCIATION with the mane who later became the Governor of Western Australia
