He was called to the Edinburgh See also:bar in 1770. His first See also:work, a supplement to Lord See also:Kames's See also:Dictionary of Decisions, entitled The Decisions of the See also:Court of Session, was published in 1778, and a continuation appeared in 1796. In 178o he was appointed conjoint See also:professor of universal See also:history in the university of Edinburgh, becoming See also:sole professor in 1786. In 1783 he published Outlines of his course of lectures, extended and republished in 1801 under the See also:title of Elements of See also:General History. In 1790 he was appointed judge-See also:advocate of Scotland, and while holding this See also:- OFFICE (from Lat. officium, " duty," " service," a shortened form of opifacium, from facere, " to do," and either the stem of opes, " wealth," " aid," or opus, " work ")
office he wrote a See also:Treatise on the See also:Law of Courts-See also:Martial. In 18o1 he was raised to the See also:bench, taking his seat (1802) in the court of session as Lord Woodhouselee. He died at Edinburgh on the 5th of See also:January 1813.
