His successors, involved in all the See also:wars of the See also:kings of See also:England in See also:Normandy, were alternately deprived and repossessed of their domains, according to the fluctuations of See also:fortune between the See also:rival parties. Mabille, countess of Alencon and heiress of this See also:family (d. ro82), married See also:Roger of See also:Montgomery, and from them descended a second See also:house of Alencon which became See also:extinct in the See also:person of See also:Robert IV.;, the See also:county of Alencon was then joined to the royal domain. It was successively granted as an See also:appanage to See also:Peter, son of St See also:Louis (2268), and to See also:Charles, See also:count of See also:Valois, See also:brother of See also:Philip the See also:Fair (1293). The third house of Alencon sprang from Charles, second son of the count of Valois, who was killed at the See also:battle of See also:Crecy in 1346. See also:John, 1st See also:duke of Alencon, was killed at See also:Agincourt on the 25th of See also:October 14151 after having with his own See also:hand slain the duke of See also:York. His son, also named John, was dispossessed of his duchy by the See also:king of England, but reconquered it in 1449. In 1524 the dukedom of Alencon reverted to the See also:crown, in consequence of the See also:death of the duke Charles IV. without issue of his See also:marriage with See also:Margaret, See also:sister of See also:Francis I. It was given as a See also:jointure to See also:Catherine de'See also:Medici in 1559, and as an appanage to her son Francis in 1566. It was pawned by See also:Henry IV. to the duke of See also:Wurttemberg, and subsequently it passed to Gaston, duke of See also:Orleans, by See also:grant of Louis XIII.; to See also:Elizabeth of Orleans, duchess of See also:Guise; to Charles, duke of See also:Berry, See also:grandson of Louis XIV.
