Educated at See also:Aberdeen University, he went to See also:France in 1573, and studied See also:law under See also:Cujas, at See also:Bourges, where he took his See also:doctor's degree. In 1603, however, he was obliged to quit France, having incurred the enmity of the See also:Jesuits, through his opposition to their proposal to admit his son See also:John (q.v.) a member of their society. Returning to See also:England, he was offered considerable preferment by See also:King See also:James on See also:condition of becoming a member of the See also:Church of England. This offer he refused, and returned to France in 1604, when he was appointed professor of civil law in the university of See also:Angers: He died at Angers in 16o8. His See also:principal See also:works were De Regno et Regale Potestate, &c. (See also:Paris, 'boo), a strenuous See also:defence of the rights of See also:kings, in which he refutes the doctrines of See also:George See also:Buchanan, " See also:Junius See also:Brutus " (See also:Hubert See also:Languet) and See also:Jean See also:Boucher; and De Potestate Papae, &c. (See also:London, 1609), in opposition to the usurpation of temporal See also:powers by the See also:pope, which called forth the celebrated reply of See also:Cardinal See also:Bellarmine; also commentaries on some of the titles of the See also:Pandects.
